BLOOD WEDDING (Bodas de Sandgre), first premiered in 1974 at the Teatro Olímpico in Rome, is one of Antonio Gades’ most celebrated works and a milestone in the history of Spanish dance. Inspired by Federico García Lorca’s tragedy, Gades transformed flamenco into a dramatic language, capable of narrating passion, destiny, and death. The ballet also marked the beginning of Gades’ legendary collaboration with filmmaker Carlos Saura, whose film adaptation introduced this masterpiece to the world. Critics continue to hail it as “the Guernica of Spanish dance” (ABC Cultura, 2023).
